What You Should Know AICP officially changed from Continuing Education Credits to the Certificate Maintenance (or “CM”) Program on April 13, 2007.
All AICP credentialed planners are required to earn 32 CM credits every two years. Generally, one CM credit hour equals one hour of instructional time. The total required CM credits must include at least 1.5 credits in the area of ethics and 1.5 CM credits in the area of current planning law. A maximum of 16 logged CM credits can be carried over (after the required 32 credits have been achieved) to the next two-year reporting period. However, law and ethics credits cannot be carried over. Up to eight credits can be self-reported for events that did not officially receive AICP CM certification.
The first two-year cycle began on January 1, 2008 (excluding planners that received a CPD certificate valid through the end of 2009). Credits earned between April 14, 2007 and December 31, 2009 count towards the current two-year cycle. The second cycle begins January 1, 2010.
Members will have a four-month grace period after December 31, 2009, to complete the CM credit requirements. Failure to meet the CM requirements will result in loss of certification, requiring members to seek recertification to continue use of the AICP credential.
For an event to qualify for CM credits, several criteria must be met: 1) the organizer of the event must be registered as a “provider” with AICP, 2) the event must be submitted and approved by AICP, and 3) the provider must pay AICP a per-credit fee. Certain members may be eligible for CM exemption and waivers.
Go to www.planning.org. On the right side of the page, log in using your APA member number or email, and password. In the same box, click “Track My Certification Maintenance Credits.” To add credits from approved events, click “Add Credits from Calendar.” To add credits from a self-reporting event, click “Add Self-Reported Credits.” The key to successfully searching for an event is to enter as little information as possible (i.e. enter one word of the event name). Scroll down and look for the date of the event. When you find the event you are looking for, click on the title. A box will open asking you to rate the event and verify your attendance.
For a complete list of Frequently Asked Questions, including information on member requirements, eligible educational activities, and logging CM Credits see http://www.planning.org/customerservice/.

How You Can Help
We encourage our members to be patient throughout this process. We know that the CM program is an expensive proposition for both employers and employees, and the Sun Coast Section pledges to do everything in our power to keep costs down.
We need people willing to donate their time and energy to assist with a variety of tasks. Specific needs include:
Ideas – Is there a workshop or topic that you would be particularly interested in?
Speakers – Is there a particular topic that you’d like to present or a particular tour that you’d like to host? Please let us know, since we would be glad to assist you in organizing a local event in your area.
Facilitators – Have a planning book that you’re just itching to discuss with your colleagues? Interested in facilitating a book discussion in your area for CM credit? Let us know!
Volunteers – If you have more time than ideas, or just like being the person behind the scenes that makes it all possible, we have great need for people to help organize and host events and man the registration table.
What We Ask You To Do
Please read your Section emails. These will contain valuable information relating to activities which have received and/or are awaiting approval for CM credit.
Please check our Section website for the latest news and CM event opportunities.
Please update your contact information as it changes. To see what information is currently on file for you with the APA Florida Chapter, check the website www.floridaplanning.org/login.asp. If the contact information is incorrect, go to www.planning.org. On the right side of the page, log in using your APA member number or email, and password. In the same box, click “Go to My APA.” Click “Edit” at the bottom of the Contact Information section.
Please be courteous to your fellow planners by only RSVPing to events if you are certain you can attend. Due to a variety of factors we often have to limit the number of people who can participate in any one event. Members who RSVP and do not provide at least 24 hours notice of cancellation will be invoiced and prompt payment is expected. Please be aware that we have to take this unfortunate measure to not only ensure the availability of CM credit opportunities but also maintain the affordability and viability of future credit opportunities.
Anticipated Credit Offerings
Self study materials will be available shortly (additional information will be posted soon on our website). For a small fee this will be available for check out. You will have the option to either pick up or receive via US mail an audio CD which will count for a certain number of credits. Details regarding the cost, number of anticipated credits, and details on reserving a specific title are forthcoming. We realize this method is idea for those who have demanding schedules or are otherwise unable to attend formal events. Depending upon the level of response we receive, we may add additional titles to our collection.
Sun Coast Section will continue to coordinate workshops, tours and facilitated book discussions. We will also partner with other nearby sections to provide additional access to CM activities.
